In Search of a Slow and Simple Christmas

Tuesday, 24 December 2024

The run-up to Christmas is always stressful for us, isn't it? No matter whether we're going all-in, or just having a quiet one, it's always a time of stress, of overwhelm, of anxiety.

Christmas Overwhelm, struggle with Christmas, stressful Christmas, Holiday stress, seasonal stress, Winter stress, mental health gets worse at Christmas, Christmas worries.

The pressure to overspend is immense. The incessant marketing is irritating. The pressure to have a perfect Christmas is awful.

The truth of the matter is, Christmas usually isn't a perfect time for us. It's a lot to deal with. Lots of plates to spin. Lots of things to cram in. And, usually, having to do lots of things that you don't really want to do.

Personally, I've been feeling incredibly stressed lately. Christmas is a time of year that should signify a break, a chance to wind down, and a moment to breathe - but, let's face it, it's usually quite the opposite.

On a positive note, the stress of buying more and more presents for people this year has encouraged me to think about how I can do things differently going forwards. I think, next year, I'd like to make more once again. It's something I used to do when I was a student and seriously short of cash, and perhaps, the joy of giving will become greater if it's something I've actually taken the time to make myself.

I'm one of those people who puts a lot of thought into presents. I don't half get perfectionistic about proceedings. This only serves to increase my stress, though. Things need to change if I fancy a calmer, simpler life.

Even though this Christmas will hopefully be a low-key affair with lots of quiet moments scattered throughout - ever the introvert that I am - it's still a temporary upheaval that I struggle to deal with.

I should, perhaps, stop waffling and let you get on with your festivities.

Have a wonderful Christmas, whether it's a quiet one or a loud one. I'll be back in 2025 for some more waffling on.

Have a good one,
Kate
